Majiang is a popular Chinese tile-based game that is enjoying increasing popularity around the world. It is often referred to as mahjong in English-speaking countries, and it is a prevalent social game played between four players. Many variations of the game exist, and the rules can vary from one region or family to another.

Majiang is a popular Chinese tile-based

In Mahjong, there are four melds, namely Pung, Chow, Kong and Eyes. A pung is a set of three identical tiles, such as three ones or three dragons. A chow is a set of three consecutive numbers in the same suit, like 1-2-3 bamboo, or 4-5-6 circles. A kong is a set of four identical tiles, like 4-4-4-4 dots. Finally, eyes are two identical tiles, such as two twos or two red dragons.

The aim of Majiang is to score points by making melds, either sets or pairs. Players can also score points by claiming discarded tiles from other players. As the tiles run out, the player with the highest number of points wins the game.

There are two types of hands in Majiang, concealed and exposed. A concealed hand is made up of all 14 melds contained within the tiles of the player and does not have any visible melds from the other players’ discards. An exposed hand is made up of at least one visible meld from the other players’ discards.

The gameplay of Majiang is fairly simple, but learning all the rules can take some time. The player who is responsible for dealing the tiles each round is known as the East Wind player. He passes out tiles to the other players before drawing tiles for himself. The player on the East winds right is known as the South Wind, then West Wind and finally North Wind.

During each round, the players try to form complete melds and place them face up on the table. They can also choose to keep melds concealed by keeping them in their hands. The players take turns picking up and discarding tiles until somebody makes a winning hand. If a player believes he has made a winning hand, he can declare a self-drawn win or call “Majiang!”.

Players also have the option of making special moves called “robbing the Kong” or “punging from the wall”. Robbing the Kong is when a player takes the fourth tile from a Kong meld from the table and thus completes his own meld. Punging from the wall is when the player takes a tile from the dead wall, which is the wall of tiles remaining unused in the game, to complete a meld.

When playing Mahjong, scoring usually involves various bonuses and multipliers, such as earning double if the hand is concealed, or double if the winning tile is from another player’s discard.

To sum up, Mahjong is a interesting and complex game that requires knowledge and skill to master. Players must be familiar with the different types of hands and melds, as well as the special moves they can make. Although the learning curve isn’t too steep, it is recommended that new players learn the basics of the game and practice often to become competent players.
